Whilst we will (and have) cure some and hopefully all cancers, because mutation is a natural part of our evolution we will never eradicate cancer in the same way as we have done for viral disease like small pox. Therefore cures for cancer will be great inventions because they will be constantly needed

I think the advances we have made with the fight against cancer are all very positive. If we could cure cancer that would be great but as with anything we are trying to act against, it can mutate and change, so sad to say but we may never have a cancer free world.

But as we cure more cancers, would the population not increase to a limit that exceeds the planets capacity?

Interesting point, Sam. As cancer is not one of the top overall killers globally (heart disease, strokes and lung infections kill far more people), I don’t think this would be the case. We also have to look into ways of reducing the birth rate if we want to avoid a “Logan’s Run” type solution to the problem of a population with limited resources.

Logan’s Run is an old sci-fi movie. It depicts a future world where everyone is killed on their 30th birthday to conserve resources.
