I took the fairly traditional academic route (technical routes are also available) to becoming a chemist by first studying a degree at university. I could have gone on to a career as a scientist then, but I chose to spend some more time at university to get my doctorate (the highest academic award) in chemistry. Since then, I’ve worked as a researcher in various universities.

After finishing A-levels I wanted to go to University and I enjoyed Chemistry so decided to study that. Then once finishing my degree I decided that been a student was fun so stopped on to do a PhD then after that just went with the flow and stayed in research.

In short, by doing what I enjoyed the most!

During my A-levels, I realised I really enjoyed the practical work that chemists do! I went on a degree taster course and went to lectures during a real degree! I did my masters which allowed me to spend a year working in a real science job. That helped me to see how the science I got taught related to real world science. Now I am working on science I find interesting.
