An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist. That is, it is the smallest piece of an element that still retains all the chemistry of that element. Go any smaller and you are into the sub-atomic – protons, neutrons and electrons – that make up an atom. It is the sharing and movement of electrons between atoms that makes chemistry happen – although the protons and neutrons do have a role to play too.
Atoms are the smallest unit chemists use to explain elements. They are made up of electrons (which are negatively charged), protons (which are positively charged) and neutrons (which have no charge). Each element has a different number of number of electrons, protons and neutrons in its atom (or atomic structure).
